The Substitute Teacher works with teachers following all established classroom practices and rules to ensure safe, secure, welcoming, fun-filled learning environments for Early Head Start/Head Start Children. The susbtitute Teacher is required to be available between the hours of 7:30 a.m-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, to be on call and ready to come in as needed.  

 

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Under the direction of the Center Manager or designee, provide coverage and/or support for teaching staff in the planning and implementation of age and developmentally appropriate curriculum for children, including daily open-ended activities to expand their competencies across developmental domains and carry out primary responsibilities of that position
  • Maintain appropriate teacher- child ratios
  • Ensure visual supervision of children in the classroom and outdoors at all times
  • Contribute to a safe, healthy, nurturing, and culturally relevant classroom environment for all children and families
  • Follow directions of Wu Yee’s Center Managers, lead , associate and resource teachers.
  • Share any important information that you observe with the Lead Teacher and Center Manager.
  • Refer any important family issues to the lead teacher and center manager. Please do not address the family with any concerns without a lead teacher or Center Manager present.
  • Maintain timely communication with Wu Yee program staff.
  • Conduct adult initiated activities as indicated in the lesson plan
  • Act as support and resource during child initiated activities
  • Report/document child injuries 
  • Assist to set up the classroom environment as needed
  • Assist with cleaning chores as needed
  • Clean, sanitize toys as needed
  • Model Family Style meal times for children
  • Perform daily health check for children entering the center
  • Ensure that that children are signed in and out of the center appropriately
  • Ensure documentation of all significant contacts with families
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Teachers will be assigned to work where needed and during their course of employment may need to work at other locations to meet program needs.

 

Knowledge/Experience/Skills Required:

  • A Valid CAlifornia Child Development Associate Teacher Permit 
  • A minimum of 6 months of teaching experience with young children
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents and other staff
  • Excellent Communication skills and an overall positive and professional attitude
  • Ability to work and travel at all Wu Yee Locations (12 location in San Francisco)
  • Models good judgment and ability to make quick decisions
  • Able to bend and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Spanish /English fluency or Cantonese /English fluency are preferred
